South Georgia Technical College Lady Jets basketball player Houlfat Mahouchiza has signed a letter of intent to continue her college career at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, a member of the Big Ten conference.

The Nice, France native and sophomore small forward is one of four returning players for the Lady Jets. During the 2016-2017 season, Mahouchiza played in 35 games and averaged 6.6 points-per-game to help lead the team to a 30-5 season with a Sweet 16 berth in the NJCAA National Tournament.

Lady Jets head coach James Frey and assistant coach Kezia Conyers sat with Mahouchiza at the signing table and offered their support.

“[Mahouchiza] has worked hard and had a really good second-half of her freshman season. She played well at the national tournament and set herself up to be recruited by a lot of good schools,” Frey said.

The decision was tough for Mahouchiza, Frey said. She decided which team she would play for just two days prior to National Signing Day.

“She, more than any player I’ve ever had, really took her time and went through the process [of deciding on a team]. She went through a checklist of things she was looking for in a school and asked a lot of good questions. She’s pretty solid in her decision so I’m excited for her,” he said.

While two previous Lady Jets had received offers to play basketball for teams in the Power 5 conferences, Mahouchiza is the first to commit to a top-tier NCAA team.

The Lady Jets opened up the 2017-2018 season recently at home and hold a 3-0 record. The team was given a preseason ranking of No. 13 in the NJCAA national rankings. The Lady Jets will return home on Nov. 15 when they take on The Lady Trailblazers of Atlanta Metropolitan College in their second conference matchup of the season.
