SGTC’s Mike Boone signs letter to play at Fayetteville State University

Fayetteville, NC – South Georgia Technical College sophomore guard Mike Boone from Charlotte, NC, has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball at Fayetteville State University in Fayetteville, NC. Fayetteville State University is an NCAA Division II university that participates in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). They have over 5,000 undergraduate students.
“Mike is a great addition to the Bronco family,” said Fayetteville State University head coach Ken Spencer. “We are expecting him to come in and contribute right away. I know he is coming from a good program, being coached by Travis Garrett, so he is prepared for the tough competition that he will face in the CIAA. He is a good student, athlete, person, and he is tough. That is everything I look for in a point guard,” added Coach Spencer.
Coach Spencer will be starting his second season as the head coach at Fayetteville State University. His Broncos finished the 2017 – 2018 season with a 10 – 19 overall record but reached the second round of the CIAA Tournament and dropped a 68 – 58 loss to Johnson C. Smith, the top-ranked team.
“This is a good fit for Mike Boone,” said South Georgia Technical College head coach Travis Garrett. “This is close to home for him and he will be able to go in and contribute and make a difference. We are very proud of him and wish him the best as he continues his education and his basketball career.”
Mike Boone helped lead the South Georgia Technical College Jets to a 20 – 12 overall record in 2017 – 2018 and a second place finish in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XVII tournament in Rome, Georgia.
The 6’ 2” guard averaged 10.9 points per game for the Jets and started 22 of the 26 games that he played in for the Jets this season. He shot 41.5 percent from the field, hit 40.9 percent of his three-point attempts and was a 77 percent free throw shooter.
In addition to averaging in double-digits for the Jets, he also averaged 3.5 rebounds per game, 2.6 assists and 1.3 steals.
