South Georgia Tech SkillsUSA group reaching out to community
The South Georgia Technical College SkillsUSA program is paving the way for our future workforce by reaching out to different groups in the community.
The South Georgia Tech local membership team members reached out to the elderly at the Americus Senior Center, under the leadership of Mrs. Alice Bridges. This center has been promoting the growth, involvement, and well-being of Senior Citizens since the early seventies. They believe senior citizens are one of America’s greatest resources and they are dedicated to aiding the independence and dignity of older persons. The SGTC students joined with the seniors in different social activities and indoor games.
SkillsUSA is partnership of students, instructors, and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. SkillsUSA helps each student excel. South Georgia Technical College and other SkillsUSA chapters provide educational programs, events and competitions that support career and technical education in the nation’s classrooms.
Cynthia Carter, Director of Careers Services & Student Organizations, is sensitive to the needs of this area’s elderly neighbors. Members believe opportunities for an active and fulfilling life should not be limited because of one’s age. This was a great opportunity for socialization. SGTC notepad/pen sets, infinity scarves, and warm fluffy socks were shared with the seniors. During the 2018-2019 school year, SkillsUSA Plan of Work includes taking community service to a higher level.
