SGTC’s nationally ranked Lady Jets capture 9th consecutive victory

The nationally ranked South Georgia Technical College Lady Jets stretched their winning streak to nine straight with a 72 – 51 conference decision over the Southern Crescent Lady Tigers over the weekend. The win put the Lady Jets at 9 – 1 overall and kept them in 1st place with a 4- 0 record in Georgia College Athletic Association Conference play.
“We are still not coming out and taking care of business,” said South Georgia Technical College Athletic Director and Lady Jets head coach James Frey. “We won but we had mental lapses during the game and we can’t continue to have that. We need to play 40-minutes of consistent basketball in order to accomplish our goals.”
The Lady Jets struggled in the first half at times even though they kept the lead during the entire game. They were up 19 – 13 at the end of the first half and were still only up 37 – 26 at the end of the first half. They came back in the 3rd quarter and struggled as they maintained that 11-point lead. It was not until the fourth quarter that the Lady Jets broke away and outscored Southern Crescent 22 – 12 to take the 72 – 51 victory.
Sophomore guard Alyssa Nieves from Tampa, FL, led the team in scoring with 15 points. She also had four rebounds and two assists. Sophomore forward Ricka Jackson from Ewa Beach, HI, was close behind with 14 points. She also pulled in 10 rebounds and had two assists.
Freshman Rio Yamazaki from Noda, Japan, closed out the double-digit scoring with 10 points, two rebounds and two assists. Freshman forward Yasriyyah Wazeerud-Din and freshman guard Kamya Hollingshed from McDonough, both came off the bench and added nine and eight points each. Sophomore forward Fatou Pouye and freshm Laky Samo both contributed six points. Sophomore guard Mari Hill closed out the scoring with four points.
The Lady Jets will return to the court on Saturday, December 8th when they travel to Cuthbert to take on Andrew College in a conference match-up at 1 p.m. They will travel to Marianna, FL on December 14th and 15th for the Chipola Christmas Classics. They face East Mississippi Community College at 1 p.m. on December 14th and Denmark Tech at 11 a.m. on December 15th. They will return home to host East Georgia State College on December 19th at 2 p.m.
