Jets take back to back wins over GCAA opponents
The South Georgia Technical College Jets took two impressive wins over Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) opponents recently as they traveled to Cuthbert to take a 99 – 73 win over the Andrew College Tigers and then returned home to capture a 95 – 81 victory over East Georgia State College and former Jets head coach Travis Garrett.
The Jets are currently in a tie for third place in the GCAA standings with Albany Tech with identical 5 – 3 records. The Jets are currently 13 – 9 overall and Albany Tech is 16 – 6. Andrew College is in ninth place with a 1 – 5 GCAA record and 8 – 10 non-conference record. East Georgia dropped to seventh place after the loss to SGTC to become 2 – 5 and 8 – 12.
The Jets travel to Waycross today, February 2nd to face off against the second place South Georgia College team. The Jets defeated the 86 – 85 in Americus on January 6th. South Georgia College is currently 6 – 2 in the GCAA and 17 – 5 overall.
In the game against Andrew College, the Jets were up 45 – 36 at the end of the first half and then stretched that lead to 99 – 73 at the buzzer by outscoring the Tigers 54 – 37 in the second half.
Five Jets were in double-figures in that match-up with sophomore guard Marvin McGhee leading the team with 22 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Jalen Reynolds was close behind. He had a double-double night with 20 points and 11 rebounds.
Sophomore Will Johnston came away with 17 points and then Nathan Wilson and Malik Battle closed out the double digit scoring with 13 and 11 points respectively. Bryce Turner added seven points, Kallin Foneseca, 6, and Justice Hayes, 3.
The Jets used momentum from that win to take an impressive 95 – 71 victory over former Jets head coach Travis Garrett and the East Georgia College Bobcats. Only three Jets were in double-digits in that game with Marvin McGhee leading the pack with 30 points, eight rebounds, five assists and one steal.
Sophomores Malik Battle and Will Johnston both rallied and added 19 points. Battle had four rebounds, six assists, and one steal and Johnston had six rebounds, six assists, and two steals. Bryce Turner came away with nine points and he was followed by Jalen Reynolds who had eight points and 12 rebounds.
Closing out the scoring for the Jets was Justice Hayes with 5, Kallin Fonseca, 3, and Nathan Wilson with two.
The Jets will be looking for their fourth consecutive win tonight in Waycross and then they will return home on Saturday, February 5th for the Alumni/Sophomore Day celebration in the James S. Peters gymnasium and their observance of the 20th anniversary of the Jets. They will play Southern Crescent Tech at 3 p.m. The Lady Jets will open at 1 p.m. against Central Georgia Tech. A tailgate will be hosted by the Americus-Sumter County Chamber of Commerce with free hotdogs and hamburgers beginning at 12:15 p.m.
