The barbering and cosmetology program advisory committees of South Georgia Technical College convened recently on the college’s Americus campus to assess the current status of the programs and the broader industry landscape.

These committees serve a vital role in supporting SGTC faculty and staff in their ongoing efforts to enhance the quality of the college’s programs. Led by barbering instructor Andre Robinson and cosmetology instructor Dorothea Lusane-McKenzie, the meetings provided a platform for discussions on program updates, enrollment trends, community engagements, and student-related developments.

Members of the advisory committees play a crucial role in facilitating dialogue between industry stakeholders and SGTC faculty. Their insights inform curriculum enhancements, identify emerging training opportunities, highlight advancements in technology, and shed light on employment prospects and salary expectations for graduating students.

Members present at the advisory committee meeting included Martha Bruce of KB’s Beauty Salon, Greg Long of Long Cuts, Lisa Pate of Fringe Salon, Kembrial M. Harris of Kem’s Hair and Design, Crystal Waters of Fringe Salon, Tracy Finch of Dorothea’s Beauty Salon, and current cosmetology student Niome Reyes.

Representing South Georgia Technical College in addition to Robinson and Lusane-McKenzie were Jessakeetha Maddox, nail tech instructor; Alecia Pinckney, Administrative Assistant for Academic Affairs; and Dr. David Finley, Academic Dean.

The advisory committee is a crucial link that provides an avenue for South Georgia Tech instructors to learn about changing conditions or technology in the workplace that can then be passed along to students that will enable them to be fully prepared upon graduation.
