Jake Pittman named SGTC new Precision Machining and Manufacturing Instructor
Jake Pittman of Leslie has joined South Georgia Technical College as the new
full-time Precision Machining and Manufacturing Technology instructor effectively immediately, announced South Georgia Technical College President Dr. John Watford. He will report to South Georgia Technical College Academic Dean David Finley and SGTC Vice President of Academic Affairs Julie Partain.
Pittman is a 2012 graduate of the South Georgia Technical College Machine Tool Technology program and attended Georgia Southwestern State University.
He has been working as the First Shift Working Lead at Pratt and Whitney in Columbus, Ga. Pittman began working there in 2012 as a Senior Tool Maker and then was promoted to First Shift Working Lead for Tool Services in 2022. His experience at Pratt and Whitney included running and programming various CNC Machines, using Surfcam to program CNC Machines, using Solidworks to create models and blueprints for various tooling, and using different manual machines such as lathes, drill presses, grinders and more in the manufacturing of precision gauges. He also worked with engineers and supervisors, and ordered materials and tools for current jobs.
Prior to joining Pratt and Whitney, Pittman worked as a Boat Engineer/CNC Router Programmer for Caravelle Boats in Americus, was a Machinist at Johnson Metal Products and a general machinist for Pittman’s Machine Service.

He will also be a great resource for the business and industry leaders and manufacturers in this area.”
Jake is the son of Gil and Laura Pittman of Leslie and is married to Libby Unfricht Pittman. The have one child.
Precision Machining and Manufacturing is an exciting field where imagination is turned into reality. Almost every product used on a daily basis has gone through a machining process of one type or another. In the SGTC Precision Machining and Manufacturing program, the students learn how to create the parts that make technology work. A machinist can take raw materials and produce a specialized finished product through knowledge that is a combination of theoretical information and hands-on experience. With practical experience in bench work, assembly layout, manual machining and computer numerical control (CNC) programming, a student will be prepared to handle a wide range of responsibilities in the metalworking industry. Machinists are in high demand and the employment outlook is expected to grow.
Students interested in pursuing a Precision Machining and Manufacturing diploma can enroll at South Georgia Technical College for Fall Semester. Classes begin August 15. SGTC is also offering an Associate Degree in Technical Studies for former graduates interested in continuing their education. Individuals who have already completed 45 hours in an occupational program can return and compete five additional core classes online or in-person to add on the Associate Degree in Technical Studies.
