South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) Drafting Technology student, Henry Johnson, was selected to participate in an internship at International Paper in Oglethorpe, GA, in the Engineering Document Support Control department.

Johnson is the fifth SGTC student to participate in the internship opportunity at International Paper and he has been working under the leadership of Rick Nelson, Document Control Engineer, who also serves on the Drafting Technology Advisory Board at SGTC.

“Henry is an awesome student – always willing to learn, always ahead on his work and he is always working towards his goal of being a residential landscape architect one day,” said Hudson. “I am very pleased that he had this opportunity.”

As an intern, Johnson works approximately 20 hours per week for one semester.  His responsibilities include redline drawings or older drawings that are being converted to IP standards.  Sandra Royal, a part-time employee, works closely with SGTC Drafting Technology Instructor Christie Hudson to select students for the internship.  The internships open the door for employment opportunities upon graduation.

Johnson is a native of Buena Vista, GA, and a 2020 graduate of Americus-Sumter High School.  He also works part-time at Farmer’s Furniture in Americus.

SGTC Career Services Director Cynthia Carter works with students, instructors and employers to find employment opportunities for the students and to showcase SGTC students, their program of study and employer engagement.

The Drafting Technology program at SGTC can be completed in four to five terms.  Students can earn technical certificates of credit, a diploma and an associate of applied science degree.  Students can choose to specialize in mechanical drafting or architectural drafting.  Students can also earn short-term certificates of credit in Advanced CAD Operator-Mechanical, Basic AutoCAD Operator, CAD Operator, CAD Operator Mechanical, and Drafter’s Assistant.

SGTC is currently registering students for an eight-week mini-mester beginning October 16.  To apply visit www.southgatech.edu and click on Apply Now at the top right hand portion of the home page.  For more information about the drafting program, contact Christie Hudson, chudson@southgatech.edu or 229-931-2561.
