South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) recently held a Breast Cancer Awareness Walk at the Crisp County Center, featuring guest speaker and cancer survivor Terri Wooden of Americus, GA. A graduate of SGTC’s Computer Information Systems program, Wooden is also a wife, mother, and grandmother. Diagnosed with breast cancer five years ago, she shared her journey of diagnosis and recovery, emphasizing the importance of faith, perseverance, and support from loved ones.

Wooden spoke about the crucial role of early detection, urging both women and men to know their bodies and seek medical help when something feels wrong. “If you can’t help yourself, how can you help someone else?” she asked, encouraging the group to take action when it comes to their health.

Around 50 students, faculty, and staff gathered to hear Wooden’s powerful story. Following her speech, participants walked a lap around the Crisp County Center’s front parking lot to show solidarity in the fight against breast cancer. The event concluded with refreshments and time for reflection on the importance of breast cancer awareness.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is observed nationwide every October to raise awareness and funds for research on the causes, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and cure of breast cancer.
