SGTC Lady Jets Stephie Salumu named GCAA Basketball Player of Week again

   The South Georgia Technical College Lady Jets moved into sole possession of first place in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) Division I women’s basketball standings and freshman guard Stephie Salumu was selected as the Player of the Week for the second time this season.

   Salumu, a 6’ 0” guard from Belgium, was selected as the GCAA Division 1 Women’s Basketball Player of the Week following an impressive 71 – 50 win over second ranked East Georgia State College last week.  She scored 17 points and had 12 rebounds for a double-double night.  This is the third time in three weeks that a SGTC Lady Jets has held this honor and the seventh time so far this season.  Salumu is the only Lady Jet so far to earn the honor twice this season.  She was first selected for the week of December 16, 2024.

   Salumu has started all 21 games for the Lady Jets and has scored 242 points this season.  She hits 57.3% of her field goal attempts and 59.2% of her foul shots.  She is the fourth leading scorer for the Lady Jets and the leading rebounder.  She has a total of 203 rebounds, 58 assists, 50 steals and 20 blocked shots.

   The Lady Jets are currently 6 – 1 in the GCAA and in first place.  They are followed by East Georgia (7 – 2), Albany Tech (4-3), Central Georgia Tech (2–5), Andrew College (1-4) and Southern Crescent Tech (0-5).

   The other five Lady Jets to earn the GCAA Division I women’s basketball player of the week honors includes:  sophomore guard Enola Papin from France; sophomore point guard Mio Sakano of Japan, freshman guard Jamiah Gregory of Marietta, GA; Mariia Ignatchenko, a freshman center from Mykolaiv, Ukraine; and Kaiya Carter, a freshman guard from Houston, TX.   Aiden Fitzgerald, a freshman forward from Australia, is the only Jets player named to the GCAA Division I men’s basketball player of the week honors this season.

   The Lady Jets have three games this week.  They will travel to Griffin tonight (Monday, Feb. 10th) to take on Southern Crescent Tech at 5 p.m.  The men will play at 7 p.m. as part of the double-header.  The Jets and Lady Jets will be at home on Wednesday, February 12 in double-headers against Central Georgia Tech.  Those games will be at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m.  Then the two teams will travel to Swainsboro for a third double-header on Saturday, February 15 against East Georgia.
