High School students enrolling in EMT classes at South Georgia Tech

CORDELE, GA – High school students in Crisp County can now start Emergency Medical Technician training while they are still in high school as part of the new Move on When Ready program at South Georgia Technical College.

Under the Move on When Ready program for high school students, the course is basically tuition free and will not count against their HOPE hours if they chose to continue on to college after high school graduation.

Nine students from Crisp County High School are currently enrolled in this program with South Georgia Technical College. They travel to the SGTC Crisp County Center campus each day to take the basic EMT course in the SGTC EMT lab.

Once these nine students graduate from high school in June and complete the EMT basic course, the high school students can take the EMT exam and start their careers in the EMT field.

“This is basically a stepping stone into the bigger picture of paramedicine,” said South Georgia Technical College Emergency Medical Technician Instructor Matt Hunt. “This is an excellent way for students who are thinking about entering the medical field to get a jump start on their careers. We enroll them in this part-time program and in six months of training, they have the basic EMT certificate of credit. It is a great opportunity.”

Hunt says he is looking forward to bringing in more students in the future.
