Lady Jets defeat Central Georgia Tech in conference match-up

The nationally ranked South Georgia Technical College Lady Jets captured their fifth straight victory and their second Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association conference win recently in an 83 – 61 win over Central Georgia Technical College out of Macon, GA.
“We are a work in progress,” said South Georgia Technical College Athletic Director and Lady Jets head basketball coach James Frey. “One minute we look like we have never played together and then the next minute we play up to our capability. I am looking forward to the time when we play up to our capability for an entire 40-minute game.”
The Lady Jets and Central Georgia Tech were tied at 17 – 17 at the end of the first quarter, but the Central Georgia Tech Lady Titans were up 9 – 2 in the first few minutes of the game. The Lady Jets fought back and were able to pull ahead 40 – 37 at the end of the first half. Central Georgia Tech actually dominated almost every statistic in the first 20-minutes except for the score. They shot 43 percent from the free throw line compared to the Lady Jets 38 percent. They were 73 percent successful from the foul line while South Georgia Tech only shot 63 percent. Central Georgia also outrebounded the Lady Jets 18 to 14 and had less turnovers.
That all changed in the second half or more specifically the fourth quarter when the Lady Jets came alive and outscored Central Georgia Tech 28 – 10 to take the 83 – 61 victory and remain unbeaten in the conference. South Georgia Tech is currently tied with Georgia Highlands for first place at 2 – 0 in the GCAA.
Four members of the Lady Jets were in double-figures at the end of the game. Bigue Sarr, the sophomore center from Dakar, Senegal, was the leading scorer for the Lady Jets with 21 points. Twenty of those points were scored in the first half. Fatou Pouye, a sophomore forward from Kaolack, Senegal, was the next leading scorer with 18 points and nine rebounds.
Sophomore guard Alyssa Nieves from Tampa, FL, accounted for 11 points and four rebounds and then freshman Kamya Hollingshed from McDonough, came up with 10 points to close out the double-digit scoring. Central Georgia Tech’s Fredricka Sheats was the only member of her team in double-figures with 20 points.
The Lady Jets will face Albany Tech on November 20th at 5:30 p.m. in an attempt to secure their sixth straight win and third consecutive conference victory. The Lady Jets are currently 5 – 1. Their only loss was in their season opener against Santa Fe College in Gainesville, FL.
The Lady Jets travel to Georgia Highlands in Rome to compete in the Thanksgiving Classic on November 24th and 25th and then return home to host Southern Crescent Technical College on December 1st at 1 p.m. The Lady Jets will take to the road until they host East Georgia College on December 19th at 2 p.m. in a conference match-up and then host the Lady Jets Holiday Classic on December 29th – 31st. They will face St. Petersburg College, Shelton State, and East Florida in that match-up.
