SGTC Lady Jets and Jets split with Chattahoochee Tech
MARIETTA, GA – The nationally ranked South Georgia Technical College Lady Jets are now 10 – 0 and are still in first place in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) conference after an 88 – 63 win over Chattahoochee Tech in Marietta. The Jets were hoping to make it a complete sweep but fell two points shy of the win in a tight 80 – 78 decision.
“We started off very slow but were able to gain some momentum in the second quarter to pull ahead 46 – 32 at the half, said South Georgia Technical College Athletic Director and Lady Jets head coach James Frey.
The two teams were tied at 22 – 22 at the end of the first quarter but the Lady Jets outscored Chattahoochee Tech 24 – 10 in the second quarter to build up a good lead at the half. The Lady Jets continued to outscore Chattahoochee 28 – 16 in the third period but slacked off in the fourth quarter and ended up with the 88 – 63 win.
Desiree Corbin, a sophomore forward, did not start the game due to an injury that required eight stitches in the Central Georgia Tech contest over the weekend. However, she came off the bench to score 25 points and pull down 21 rebounds in only 26 minutes on the court. She also had one assist and three blocked shots.
Sophomore guard Shaineequah Fluellyn also had a strong performance with a total of 16 points, six assists, four steals and two rebounds. Houlfat Mahouchiza contributed 12 points and 10 rebounds and Kanna Suzuki closed out the double digit scoring with 11 points. She also had six assists, three steals and three rebounds.
Esther Adenike added eight points, Trakyra Kidd had seven points, Marina Balaguer contributed three points and then Camille Coleman, Madison Cameron, and Scret Ethridge all had two points.
After the Lady Jets captured their 10th consecutive win, the Jets took to the court hoping to make it a clean sweep. They got behind early in first half and were down by 18 points before they came back and closed the gap to seven points in a 40 – 33 game.
The Jets actually outscored Chattahoochee Tech in the second half 45 – 40 but that left them two points shy of the tie and put them with an 80 – 78 loss.
Andre Kennedy was the top scorer for the Jets with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Four other Jets were in double figures including Bobby Jackson with 13 points and nine rebounds. Tre Teague scored 11 points, Pat Welch contributed 12 points and then Mike Boone tossed in 10 points and had 10 rebounds.
Both teams will return home on Saturday, February 11th for a big conference double-header against Georgia Highlands. The Lady Jets play at 1 p.m. and the Jets play at 3 p.m. Georgia Highlands’ women are in second place in the conference behind the Lady Jets and the Georgia Highlands’ men’s team is in first place in the conference and ranked third in the nation.
