SGTC Lady Jets volunteer to help children in community
The South Georgia Technical College Lady Jets gave back to the children in this community recently by volunteering to serve as waitresses at a special Love of Literacy Gala fundraiser held in Americus.
The Love of Literacy Gala was held to raise funds for the Books for Sumter Children Program. Each month, the Books for Sumter Children Program provides 1,000 children with a free book in the mail. And the children can be enrolled in the program until their fifth birthday. The books, along with a newsletter, are delivered by mail at no cost to the parents.
In an effort to raise funds for this worthwhile cause, the Books for Sumter Children Program hosted the Love of Literacy Gala recently and had different groups, individuals, and organizations to serve as waiters and waitresses for tips. All tips went back to the Books for Sumter Children Program.
“We were glad to help the community with this worthwhile cause,” said South Georgia Technical College Athletic Director and Lady Jets head coach James Frey. “We are teaching our players important life lessons when we encourage them to give back to this community. They have each been given a wonderful opportunity to come to South Georgia Technical College in Americus to get an education and play collegiate basketball. This is our way of helping to teach them how important it is to give back where you live, work, and play.”
The South Georgia Technical College Lady Jets are currently ranked 17th in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I conference and first in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) Division I conference.
