Eaton Management Team Visits South Georgia Technical College

Members of one of Americus’ leading manufacturers, Eaton, visited South Georgia Technical College recently to take a tour and discuss their hiring and training needs with the college’s Economic Development team.

Five members of the company’s management team, Scott Chandler, operations manager; Sam Westby, OPEX manager; Gail Elliott, senior human resources generalist; Stan Fussell, production manager; and Dwight Jones, plant manager, met with Wally Summers, SGTC’s Vice President of Economic Development, and Paul Farr, Director of Business and Industry Services, to find out how South Georgia Tech is training tomorrow’s workforce.

“The purpose of getting Eaton to come out today and have them visit our campus was to discuss the Registered Apprenticeship program, show them SGTC’s different industrial manufacturing programs and have them meet the instructors, and to just spotlight the industry-specific training that we offer at SGTC,” Farr said.

Following a presentation about SGTC’s apprenticeship program, one in which the college combines formal instruction with on-site, occupational training, the team took a tour of the John M. Pope Center – the building which houses the industrial manufacturing programs. The team visited with instructors and toured the labs of the precision machining and manufacturing, electrical systems technology, industrial systems technology and the electronics technology programs.

Each instructor had the opportunity to talk with the Eaton team, describe their program, explain how the skills they teach can be used in industry and answer any questions that they had about the program.

Summers said the goal of bringing businesses like Eaton to campus and showing them around is to bring awareness to what South Georgia Tech has to offer to the community and to the local workforce.
