High School Students Earning Degrees Through Dual Enrollment at SGTC

Chance Simpson of Marshallville and Christiana Smith of Albany are pursuing their education at South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) while they are still finishing high school. Both students enrolled at SGTC as part of Georgia’s Dual Enrollment Program. The program allows qualified high school students to maximize their education and career training by taking courses that earn college and high school credit at the same time.

Simpson is working toward diplomas and Associate Degrees in both the Computer Support Specialist and Networking Specialist programs. He is on track to complete both programs by the time he graduates from high school next spring. “The Dual Enrollment Program has helped me out a lot,” Simpson said. “It helps you get college credits early, and, if you want to go to a four-year university, you can transfer credits.”

Smith is set to earn her Associate Degree in Culinary Arts from SGTC and graduate from high school this December. “South Georgia Tech has been awesome,” she said. “They helped me navigate all the forms and applications. It’s exciting that I will earn my degree so quickly.”

Under the Dual Enrollment Program, students can take academic core courses that may transfer to other colleges and universities. Students can also take occupational and career courses that help them get a head start on an exciting, in-demand career. High School students can make the most of their time while saving money and being better prepared for their future.
