Jets, Lady Jets players named as GCAA Players of the Week
South Georgia Technical College Jets sophomore guard Rico Simmons and Lady Jets sophomore forward Esther Adenike were both selected as the Division I basketball Players of the Week for the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association this past week.
Simmons, a 5’ 9” point guard from Wilkerson County, played his freshman season with the Jets two years ago and was chosen by head coach Travis Garrett as the Most Valuable Player that year. He sat out last season but returned this year to rejoin the Jets for his sophomore season.
He averaged 19 points, five assists, 1.5 steals and five rebounds in two games for the Jets to earn the GCAA Division I Player of the Week for the men. The Jets are currently 3 – 4 on the season and 0 – 0 in the conference.
South Georgia Tech’s Esther Adenike, a 6’ 2” sophomore forward from Lagos, Nigeria, was selected as the women’s Division I Player of the Week. She was selected after she scored 45 points and averaged 16 rebounds in three wins last week for the Lady Jets.
Adenike was a freshman last season and helped lead the Lady Jets to their third National Junior College Athletic Association National Tournament in four years under Lady Jets Head Coach James Frey. She was also selected to the NJCAA Region XVII Women’s Division I All-Tournament team as a freshman. She and her teammates tied the school record for the most wins and least losses with a 30 – 5 overall record. She returned this season along with three other players to help lead the squad back to the NJCAA National Tournament.
The Lady Jets will travel to Santa Fe College in Gainesville, FL, on Wednesday, November 29th at 6 p.m. and then returns home for a conference game against Georgia Highlands College on Saturday, December 2nd at 1 p.m. The Jets travel to Miami, FL for the Miami Dade Classic on December 1st and 2nd. They take on Miami Dade at 8 p.m. Friday, December 1st and Palm Beach on Saturday, December 2nd at 12 noon. The two teams will play a double-header at home on Wednesday, December 6th. The Lady Jets host Andrew College at 5:30 p.m. and the Jets will play Tallahassee Community College at 7:30 p.m.
