Lady Jets split decisions in Daytona State Classic

Daytona Beach, FL – The South Georgia Technical College Lady Jets split decisions in the Daytona State Classic in Daytona Beach over the weekend.  They took a 78 – 48 win over Daytona State College in the opening contest but then dropped a 92 – 75 decision against Hillsborough Community College in the second game of the tournament to fall to 4 – 2 on the season.

   Sophomore guard Mio Sakano from Yamanashi, Japan was four of seven from the three-point line and had a total of 19 points to lead the Lady Jets to the 30-point win over Daytona State College.  The Lady Jets only sank four three-pointers and Sakano had all four baskets.

   The Lady Jets were up 40 – 20 at the end of the first half and then continued to outpace Daytona State in the second half 38 – 28 to capture the 78 – 48 victory.  In addition to Sakano, freshman guard Jamiah Gregory from Marietta, GA, stepped up and tossed in 16 points and freshman guard Stephie Salumu from Belgium, came away with 10 points.

   Marii Ignatchenko posted eight points and nine rebounds.  Cheyenne Preston and Kaiya Carter added six points each to the total, sophomore Enola Papin had five, and then Maria Favero and Duilly Silva closed out the scoring with four points each.  Silva led the team in rebounds with 10.

   After that rousing victory, the Lady Jets stumped their toe and committed 31 turnovers in a 92 – 75 loss to Hillsborough Community College in the second game of the Daytona State Classic tournament.  They also did not fare well shooting the ball.  The Lady Jets were 27 of 70 from the field for a 38.6% success rate and seven of 19 from the three-point line to average hitting 36.8 percent of those shots and were only 14 of 24 from the foul line.

   The Lady Jets fell behind 18 – 9 at the end of the first quarter and Hillsborough widened that gap to 44 – 20 at the half.  The Lady Jets won the third quarter 23 – 15 but Hillsborough rallied in the fourth to outscore the Lady Jets 33 – 32 and take the 92 – 75 decision.

   Sophomore Mio Sakano and freshman guard Jamiah Gregory from Marietta tied for top scoring honors with 17 points each.  Freshman guard Kaiya Carter, sophomore Enola Papin, and sophomore Maria Favero all posted double-digits scoring 14, 11, and 10 points respectively.

   Freshman guard Stephie Salumu of Belgium added four points but led the team in rebounds with 10.  Freshman Hayda Toro of Buford, GA, closed out the scoring with two points.

   The Lady Jets will be playing at home in the Pete Arrington Thanksgiving Classic, November 29, 30 and December 1.  They will host Cape Fear Community College at 7 p.m. on November 29, USC Salkehatchi at 7 p.m. on November 30 and Southern Union State at 5 p.m. December 1.

   South Georgia Tech’s Lady Jets will return to the road on December 13 and 14th for the Palm Beach State College Classic.  They will face Florida State College on Jacksonville at 6 p.m. December 13 and Palm Beach State College on December 14 at 2 p.m.  They travel to Chipola College in Marianna, FL on December 19 at 12 noon CST before returning home for the Lady Jets Holiday Classic on December 28 – 30.  They will play St. Petersburg College at 5 p.m. December 28, Eastern Florida State College at 7 p.m. December 29, and Daytona State College at 7 p.m. December 30.
