Lady Jets win 11th straight victory; Jets defeat Gulf Coast
The nationally ranked South Georgia Technical College Lady Jets captured their 11th consecutive victory recently after defeating Andrew College, 102 – 31 in a Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association conference match-up and then traveled to Marianna, FL, to take down East Mississippi Community College 69 – 56 in the Chipola Christmas Classic tournament.
And while the Lady Jets moved to 11 – 1 on the season, the Jets came up with an impressive 76 – 70 win over Gulf Coast Community College but then suffered an 89 – 56 loss to Chipola in the Chipola Classic in Marianna, FL. The Jets are now 3 – 8 overall.
The Lady Jets are currently ranked 16th in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I women’s basketball standings and are in first place in the Georgia Junior College Athletic Association (GCAA) Division I rankings with a 5 – 0 performance. The Lady Jets will host East Georgia at 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 19th in a conference match-up and then take a break until the Lady Jets Holiday Classic, December 29th – 31st in the Hangar. The Jets travel to Marion Military on December 17th in Monroeville, AL and then will break until they return for the Jets Holiday Classic on December 29th and 30th.
The Lady Jets coasted to a 102 – 31 win over Andrew College in Cuthbert and had five players score in double-figures. The game was never in doubt with the Lady Jets up 22 – 4 at the end of the first quarter and then 53 – 17 at the half. They continued to dominate in the second half despite giving every player on the bench plenty of playing time.
Kamya Hollingshed, the 5’ 7’ freshman shooting guard from McDonough, led the team in scoring with 19 points and she was followed by sophomore center Bigue Sarr who tossed in 17 points and had 11 rebounds for a double-double on the night with only 19 minutes of playing time.
Sophomore Ricka Jackson tossed in 13 points, freshman Laky Samo came off the bench to added 12 points and then sophomore guard Mari Hill contributed 11 points. Freshmen Amara Edeh, Rio Yamazaki and Anna McKendree all came off the bench and had nine, eight, and seven points respectively in the Andrew Contest. Fatou Pouye contributed four points and six rebounds, and Oumy Gueye closed out the scoring with two points.
Then the Lady Jets traveled to Marianna, FL to post a 69 – 56 win over East Mississippi Community College. The Lady Jets were up 12 – 10 at the end of the first quarter and hung on to that two-point lead to go into half-time with a 25 – 23 lead. The Lady Jets came on strong in the third quarter and outscored East Mississippi 21 – 14 in the third quarter and continued to expand that lead in the fourth quarter and finished with a 69 – 56 victory.
Sophomore center Bigue Sarr was the top scorer in this contest with 16 points and 13 rebounds for her second double-double performance in two games. Sophomores Ricka Jackson and Fatou Pouye added 13 points each to close out the double-digit scoring. Rio Yamazaki tossed in eight points for the Lady Jets and Laky Samo posted six points. Mari Hill came up with five points, five assists and two steals, Amara Edeh contributed four points and then Yasriyyah Wazeerud-din and Anna McKendree closed out the scoring with two points each.
The Jets opened the Chipola Classic with an impressive 76 – 70 victory over Gulf Coast. The Jets were down 39 – 37 at the end of the first half but outscored Gulf Coast 39 – 31 in the second half to capture the win.
Freshman guard Justin Johnson led the Jets in scoring with 20 points and then Jeremy Johnson and Jaylan McKinney closed out the double-digit scoring with 13 and 11 points respectively. Khader Bini added eight points, Brice Paster came up with six points and then Johnathan Tchuisse, Sam Matice, Nick Cummings, and DJ Fisher each tossed in four points. Dijon Brown rounded out the scoring for the Jets with two points.
In the second game of the Chipola Classic, Chipola jumped out to a 56 – 28 lead in the first half and even though the Jets held them to only 33 points in the second half, the Jets suffered an 89 – 56 loss.
Freshman guard Toriano Lewis came off the bench to lead the Jets in scoring with 11 points. Freshman Justin Johnson and Sophomore Johnathan Tchuisse each accounted for 10 points to close out the double-digit scoring for the Jets in that game. Sam Matice and Brice Paster had six points each, Jeremy Johnson scored four points Adonis Green had three, and then Jaylan McKinney, DJ Fisher, and Khader Bini posted two points each for the Jets.
The Jets and the Lady Jets will host a Holiday Classic tournament beginning on December 29th. The Jets will play at 2 p.m. on December 29th against Shelton State and then the Lady Jets will close out the action at 8 p.m. with a match-up against St. Petersburg College. On December 30th, the Jets will play Wallace State Community College at 2 p.m. and the Lady Jets will take on Shelton State Community College at 8 p.m. in a match-up against two nationally ranked teams.
The Lady Jets Classic finishes up on December 31st with the Lady Jets playing East Florida College at 3 p.m.
