Lady Jets win two at Palm Beach State College Classic
Palm Beach, FL – The South Georgia Technical College Lady Jets clinched two wins in the Palm Beach State College Classic recently to move to 7 – 3 on the season. The Lady Jets defeated Florida State College of Jacksonville, 91 – 73; and then took a 79 – 69 win over Palm Beach State College.
In the opening game, sophomore Mio Sakano, a sophomore guard from Yamanashi, Japan, and Kalya Carter, a freshman guard from Houston, Texas led the Lady Jets in scoring with 20 points each. Three other Lady Jets also reached double digits with freshmen Stephie Salumu, Mariia Ignatchenko, and Jamiah Gregory each accounting for 11 points.
Even though the Lady Jets ended up winning by 18 points, they trailed 39 – 38 at the end of the first half. The Lady Jets outscored Florida State 28 – 13 in the third quarter and 25 – 21 in the fourth quarter to end up with the 91 – 73 victory.
In addition to the five Lady Jets in double-digits, sophomore Enola Papin added eight points, Duilly Silva tossed in six, Cheyenee Preston had four and Hayda Toro closed out the scoring with two points.
The Lady Jets built on that win to take a 79 – 69 win over Palm Beach State College to extend their winning streak to three straight. In that game, freshman guard Stephie Salumu from Sint-Niklaas, Belgium led the team in scoring with 27 points. She also had seve rebounds, three assists and four steals.
Freshman guard Jamiah Gregory from Mariette, GA followed with 16 points, Mio Sakano added 12 points and Kalya Carter was in double-digits again with 10 points. Other Lady Jets scoring included: Mariia Ignatchenko and Hayda Toro with five points each, and Enola Papin and Duilly Silva with two points each.
The Lady Jets also had to come from behind in this match-up after fall behind 15 – 14 at the end of the first quarter. They rallied in the second quarter to outscore Palm Beach 22 – 7 and that 15 point advantage allowed them to take with 79 – 69 victory.
The Lady Jets have one more game on the road before returning home. They will face Chipola College in Marianna, FL, on December 19 at 12 noon CST. After that the Lady Jets have a short break before hosting the Lady Jets Holiday Classic on December 28 – 31. The Lady Jets will play St. Petersburg College on December 28 at 5 p.m. and then host Eastern Florida at 7 p.m. on December 29 and play Chipola College at 4 p.m. on December 31.
Other teams participating in the tournament include Chattanooga State, Shelton State, Northeast Mississippi, and Daytona State. On Saturday, December 28th, SGTC has the only game against St. Petersburg. On Sunday, December 29, play starts at 1 p.m. with St. Petersburg vs. Chattanooga State. Chipola will play Shelton State at 3 p.m. followed by Dayton State and Northeast Mississippi at 5 p.m. and SGTC and Eastern Florida at 7 p.m.
On Monday, December 30, Northeast Mississippi will play St. Petersburg at 1 p.m., Shelton State will play Eastern Florida at 3 p.m. and Dayton State and Chipola play at 5 p.m. On Tuesday, December 31, Eastern Florida plays Northeast Mississippi at noon, Chattanooga State faces Shelton State at 2 p.m. and Chipola and SGTC finish up at 4 p.m.
Shelton State is currently ranked 9th in the nation. Chipola is ranked 11th and Eastern Florida is currently 23rd. Shelton State is 9 – 2; Chiploa is 12 – 0, and Eastern Florida is 9 – 3.
