Pennamon signs with South Georgia Technical College
Eatonton, GA – Putnam County High School Lady War Eagles basketball star Rykia Pennamon signed her letter of intent to play for South Georgia Technical College, opening the door for her to take her basketball career to the next step. The signing took place this past Tuesday at Putnam County High School.
“I’m glad I have the opportunity to further my career in basketball,” Pennamon said after signing.
The recently graduated senior was a critical factor in the team’s successful 2017-18 season. The Lady Eagles finished 20-5 this season and earned a spot in the state playoffs, where they were defeated by Model High School, 70-64. The deficit in the final game would have been much larger, however, if it hadn’t been for a late fourth-quarter surge from Pennamon that led to Putnam scoring 31 points and coming very close to erasing Model’s big lead.
Pennamon earned 27 points, five rebounds and a steal and made 80 percent of her free throws that night. On the season, she earned a total of 445 points, 204 rebounds, 55 assists, 72 steals and 21 blocks.
Several colleges approached Pennamon with an interest of recruiting her. Out-of-state schools even reached out to her with the hopes gaining her signature, but Pennamon decided on South Georgia Tech because it was close to home.
“This decision was really kind of hard to make,” Pennamon said regarding the colleges interested in her. “Schools come at you really hard. Being able to still talk to my family is what made me want to stay in-state. I wanted my family to come see me work really hard to represent Putnam County.”
Pennamon recognized that college basketball is much more fast-paced than high school, so she will be spending time on the court practicing and staying in the weight room. In addition to preparing for basketball, Pennamon said she is still deciding the next move of her education and is considering majoring in either sports management or criminal justice.
“I was told to just work hard and do what I do best,” Pennamon said. “I know my potential and I’m going to give it all I got.”
