SGTC Conducts Resume and Interview Workshop for Students on Cordele Campus
The South Georgia Technical College Crisp County Center recently held a workshop for students on how to create a professional resume and cover letter as well as how to prepare for and perform in an interview. D.W. Persall, Media & Library Services Specialist at the Crisp County Center, conducted the workshop and also stressed the importance of quality resumes, cover letters, and interview skills to success in the workforce.
Regarding resumes, Persall discussed the options for formatting and what information to include regarding education and experience. He also spoke about additional sections one could add to a resume including certifications and licenses, publications, awards, honors, and activities.
Persall then transitioned to the topic of cover letters. He informed the students that the cover letter is vital because it is how applicants introduce themselves to an organization and demonstrate their interest in the company or a specific vacancy. Persall stressed that the cover letter is often the first contact an applicant will have with a prospective employer, so it should serve to draw attention to the resume and motivate the reader to interview the applicant.
After sharing a number of “do’s & don’ts” for writing cover letters, Persall educated the students on how to prepare for and succeed in the interview process. He emphasized the importance of preparing for the interview in a number of ways including rehearsing answers to potential questions employers may ask and preparing a list of questions for the prospective employer. Among other things, he also stressed the importance of a professional appearance, punctuality, and follow-up after the interview.
