SGTC Holds Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk on the Americus Campus
South Georgia Technical College welcomed breast cancer survivor Donza Foster to the Americus campus recently to speak during the college’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month program. She is an alumna of the SGTC Criminal Justice program and a retired police sergeant in addition to being a wife, mother and grandmother.
Approximately 100 students, faculty and staff at SGTC gathered to hear Foster speak before proceeding on a walk through campus followed by refreshments.
Diagnosed with breast cancer 24 years ago, Foster shared her personal experience of diagnosis and treatment. “During this time, I had to find some hope. I had to find some faith. I had to be surrounded by positive people,” she said. She thanked her sister, SGTC Retention and Coaching Specialist Dr. Deo Cochran-Sherrod for all the support she provided while Foster underwent treatment. “She stood with me from the beginning to the end.”
The SGTC Breast Cancer Awareness Day is an annual event at South Georgia Tech to help raise awareness of breast cancer risks, identify the value of screening and early detection and educate participants on the various treatment options available for the many forms of breast cancer.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month is observed nationally each October in an attempt to increase awareness and raise funds for research into breast cancer’s cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and a cure.
