SGTC Hosts Financial Literacy Workshop for Students
Financial difficulties are the leading cause of college dropouts, a topic addressed during a recent financial literacy workshop at South Georgia Technical College’s (SGTC) Crisp County Center. Cynthia Carter, Director of Career Services, led the workshop, engaging participants with essential questions: “Where’s your money going each pay period? How’s your savings? What’s your debit or credit card balance?”
Carter emphasized the importance of understanding personal finances and setting up a budget to plan for the future. She encouraged students to identify wants vs. needs and avoid using debit cards when funds are insufficient. Carter also highlighted the stress caused by unemployment, low wages, or even working full-time and struggling to make ends meet.
She advised students to establish both checking and savings accounts and to save money they don’t plan to spend immediately. The workshop also covered the importance of maintaining a good credit score, explaining the role of credit reporting agencies—Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion—and how missed payments, overdrawn accounts, or high debt balances can negatively impact creditworthiness.
“Make every dollar count,” Carter urged students. “Focus on paying bills on time, reducing debt, and avoiding new debt. Begin practicing sound financial habits now to secure a better financial future.”
