South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) recently welcomed students from Crisp County Alternative School and Crisp Elementary School for a series of engaging, hands-on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) activities designed to introduce them to career pathways and technical skills.

Led by SGTC faculty and staff in partnership with Chattahoochee-Flint RESA, the activities provided students with opportunities to explore different fields in a fun and interactive environment. Welding instructor Tom Mayo guided alternative school students through a session on welding fundamentals, followed by a creative exercise where they sculpted artistic designs using tinfoil.

Fifth graders from Crisp Elementary School participated in a variety of STEM-based workshops. Under the guidance of Culinary Arts instructor Johnny Davis, students learned the basics of baking homemade chocolate chip cookies. They also explored computer science concepts by using binary code instructions to create custom-coded bracelets. In another session, EMT instructor Chad Mays introduced students to basic life-saving techniques, teaching them how to perform chest compressions.

These STEM initiatives are spearheaded by Heidi Goodin of Chattahoochee-Flint RESA, with support from Joanna Arnold, Jennifer Abercrombie, Tonya Barrett, Danielle Yawn, Gloria Grace Goodin, Art Rowland and SGTC faculty and staff.

South Georgia Technical College offers over 200 programs including many in STEM fields. Learn more and apply for admission to SGTC at www.southgatech.edu.
