SGTC Lady Jet Kaiya Carter earns GCAA Player of Week honors
South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) Lady Jet freshman guard Kaiya Carter was selected as the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week of December 2, 2024 following SGTC’s win over Southern Union in the Pete Arrington Thanksgiving Classic.
Carter is a 5’10” freshman guard from Houston, Texas. This is her first season at SGTC and she has helped lead the Lady Jets to a 5 – 3 start this season. She has played in all eight games since the 2024 – 2025 season opened.
Carter scored 18 points and 14 rebounds in the win over Southern Union. She is currently averaging nearly seven points per game for the Lady Jets. She has a total of 54 points and hits 36% of her field goal attempts. She hit 62% of her free throws and makes one out of every four attempts from the three-point line. She is currently the fifth leading scorer for the Lady Jets and ranked 20th in scoring in the GCAA women’s basketball Division 1 league.
In addition to her shooting, she has pulled down a total of 27 rebounds this season, 6 offensively and 21 defensively. She has seven assists, seven steals and one block. She is the second Lady Jet to be named as a GCAA Basketball Player of the Week this season.
Lady Jets Mariia Ignatchenko, a freshman center from Mykolaiv, Ukraine, was the first Lady Jet selected for this honor. She was recognized for the week of November 11 after scoring 23 points and 12 rebounds for the Lady Jets in a win over Tallahassee State College in the Tallahassee State College Classic.
The Lady Jets will travel to Palm Beach, FL, on December 13 – 14 to compete in the Palm Beach State College Classic. They will open up with Florida State College from Jacksonville at 6 p.m. December 13 and then take on Palm Beach State College at 2 p.m. on December 14. They will travel back to Florida on December 19 for a game against Chipola College in Marianna, FL at 12 noon CST.
The Lady Jets will return home to host St. Petersburg College at 5 p.m. on December 28 and then take on Eastern Florida State College and Daytona State College in the Lady Jets Holiday Classic on December 29 and 30 at 7 p.m. both nights.
