SGTC Lady Jets Alyssa Nieves named GCAA Division I Player of Week
South Georgia Technical College sophomore guard Alyssa Nieves from Tampa, FL, was selected as the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) Division I women’s basketball Player of the Week for her performance on the court for the week of January 21st, 2019.
This is the first time that Nieves has been selected for this honor and the fifth time that a Lady Jets player has been highlighted for outstanding play on the court for the 2018 – 2019 season. Sophomore’s Fatou Pouye and Bigue Sarr have also earned this distinction. Fatou Pouye has earned the honor three times and Bigue Sarr was recognized once.
Nieves averaged 17.5 points, six rebounds, three assists and one steal in a win and a loss last week for South Georgia Technical College.
The Lady Jets are currently ranked sixteenth in the nation in the National Junior College Athletic Association’s Division 1 standings and first in the GCAA Division I standings with a 10 – 0 conference record and an 18 – 3 overall record.
The Jets and Lady Jets travel to Albany to take on Albany Technical College on Wednesday, January 23rd at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. for a conference double-header on the Albany State University campus. The Jets will be back on the road on Saturday, January 26th when they travel to Barnesville for a game against Gordon State College at 3 p.m. Both teams travel to Swainsboro on Wednesday, January 30th for conference match-ups with East Georgia State College. The Lady Jets play at 5:30 and the Jets at 7:30 p.m. The two teams return home on February 2nd for a conference rematch with Central Georgia Technical College at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
