SGTC Lady Jets move to 2 – 0 in Holiday Classic with win over Lawson State
The South Georgia Technical College 16th nationally ranked Lady Jets moved to 13 – 4 on the season and 2 – 0 in the Lady Jets Holiday Classic after defeating the Lawson State Lady Cougars, 75 – 51 in their second game of the tournament in the James S. Peters gymnasium Wednesday. The Lady Jets host Gulf Coast today at 4 p.m. in the final game of the tournament.
In the other games Wednesday, the nationally ranked Georgia Highlands Lady Chargers took a 61 – 52 victory over Eastern Florida State College in a battle between the seventh ranked Georgia Highlands team and the 24th ranked Eastern Florida squad squad. Gulf Coast defeated St. Petersburg College and Chattahoochee Valley Community College defeated Tallahassee Community College 60 – 50.
The Lady Jets Holiday Classic competition begins again on Thursday, December 30th. The games start at 10 a.m. with Eastern Florida and Chattahoochee Valley and then at 12 noon, St. Petersburg will play Lawson State. Tallahassee Community College and Georgia Highlands match-up at 2 p.m. and the Lady Jets will close out the tournament with a game against Gulf Coast at 4 p.m.
SGTC Lady Jets James Frey was pleased with another win by the Lady Jets to move to 2 – 0 in the tournament. “We are still sluggish but we cut down on the turnovers. We are still missing a lot of shots right up under the basket but we are doing a better job of rebounding. We still have a long way to go but hopefully we will continue to improve each week.”
Red-shirt sophomore Kamiya Hollingshed led the Lady Jets in scoring with a total of 18 points. She was three of seven from the three-point line and three of four from the foul line. She shot six of 13 from the field. She also had three rebounds and three steals.
Joining Hollingshed in double-digits was freshman Alexia Dizeko with 17 points and sophomore point guard Maikya Simmons with 10 points. Dizeko hit 11 of 12 free throws and then was three of eight from the field. She also had nine rebounds. Simmons was four of four from the foul line and three of six from the field.
Rounding out the scoring for the Lady Jets were Luana Leite and Franta Gasama with eight points each. Susaa Posada accounted for seven points, Loes Rozing, 4, and Laurie Calixte, 3.
The Lady Jets finish out the Holiday Classic today and then will travel to Macon to play Central Georgia Tech in a conference game on January 5th at 5:30 p.m. They travel to Southern Crescent Technical College in Griffin on Saturday, January 8th at 1 p.m. for a double-header with the Jets playing at 3 p.m.
The next home games for the Jets will be January 6th at 7 p.m. against South Georgia State College followed by a match-up with Albany Technical College on January 13th at 7 p.m. The Lady Jets will host Albany Tech at 1 p.m. on January 15th and then the two teams will match-up with East Georgia on January 22nd at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
