The South Georgia Technical College Library Advisory Committee met recently in the Library (Hicks Hall, Room 105) on the Americus campus to elect new officers and discuss the ways the library can support the over 200 educational programs available at SGTC.

After an introduction of the new members and the presentation of an administrative report by SGTC Institutional Effectiveness Director and Grants Coordinator Katrice Martin, the committee elected GSW Access Services Supervisor Jennifer Griffin, Chair; Lake Blackshear Regional Library System Director Anne M. Isbell, Vice-Chair; and Dr. Ellen Cotter, GSW Professor, Department of Psychology and Sociology, Secretary.

Once the officers were selected, SGTC Librarian John Wilson discussed several Library updates, including the inventory/shelving project currently in progress to create additional space for new computers. Wilson also discussed SGTC’s future involvement with TechExpress, an interlibrary loan program that gives the SGTC Community access to over twenty libraries in the Technical College System of Georgia.

After Wilson’s updates, committee member Herschel A. Smith III, Commander USN Retired, discussed SGTC’s rich history with aviation and American aviator Charles A. Lindbergh. Smith will store Lindbergh artifacts at the Library.

Wilson mentioned the possibility of a library theme built around aviation and Charles Lindbergh. The famed pilot purchased his first airplane (a Jenny) at Souther Field in 1923 and learned to fly over the grounds of what is now the SGTC Americus Campus.  Lindbergh would later become the first person to fly non-stop from New York to Paris in 1927 in the “Spirit of St. Louis.”

The committee also discussed ideas and suggestions for future library activities/programs and will meet again in September.

In addition to the meeting, Wilson shared that he is working with instructors as they prepare their syllabi for next semester that he is available to speak to students about the wonderful resources SGTC provides for their classroom and research assignments.  He also encouraged instructors to plan trips to the library with their students to help them become more familiar with their offerings. Wilson also encourages any student who needs research or citation help to reach out to the library at john.wilson@southgatech.edu.

Present for the meeting were SGTC Librarian John Wilson; SGTC Institutional Effectiveness Director and Grants Coordinator Katrice Martin; SGTC Criminal Justice Instructor Teresa McCook; SGTC Americus Core Classes Tutor Dr. Pam Fields; SGTC Administrative Assistant to the V.P. of Academic Affairs Alecia Pinckney; GSW Access Services Supervisor Jennifer Griffin; Lake Blackshear Regional Library System Director Anne M. Isbell; GSW Interlibrary Loan Assistant Adrian Hollomon; Herschel A. Smith III, Commander USN Retired; and Dr. Ellen Cotter, GSW Professor, Department of Psychology and Sociology.
