South Georgia Technical College Precision Machining and Manufacturing instructor Chad Brown challenged his students to be creative and manufacture items that could be auctioned at the South Georgia Technical College Foundation Employee Luncheon and Silent Auction 2019 TechForce kickoff event. All the donations help support new equipment for the Precision Machining and Manufacturing Program as well as Air Conditioning Technology, Construction Trades, Log Truck Driver Safety Training, and student scholarships and textbooks.

“I asked the students to participate and challenged them to think outside of the box and create something they would be proud to put their name on,” said Instructor Brown. “This was a great exercise to show students how they can envision an item, draft or draw up the specifications, and then actually create their own design and see the finished product.”

The students created metal name plate holders, pen and name plate holders, trays, canvas drawings of the Pope Center, Jets and Lady Jets items, jewelry, desk decorations, and tools. “I was very proud of these students. They did a great job and it was a good way to show them how they can apply the skills they are learning in this program. Machinists can and do make parts for everything we enjoy today,” said Brown.

The student made items were a big hit with the faculty and staff in the silent auction bidding. During the silent auction, SGTC faculty and staff were bidding on donated items to help the Foundation provide funding for scholarships and textbooks at no cost for students, as well as state-of-the-art equipment for Construction Trades, Precision Machining and Manufacturing, Air Conditioning Technology and Log Truck Driver Safety Training programs. The faculty and staff raised nearly 10% of the total goal of $300,000 through one-time donations, payroll deductions, and the silent auction.

The purpose of the “Impacting Student Success @ South Georgia Tech” fund drive is to provide assistance to students as they prepare to enter the workforce. This time, the Precision Machining and Manufacturing students and Instructors donated their time and talents to help the Foundation.
