SGTC Precision Machining and Welding Students Meet with U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit Representatives
Precision Machining and Manufacturing and Welding and Joining Technology students at South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) recently welcomed representatives from the United States Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) for a recruiting visit. The visitors included Sergeant First Class Jordan Hamernik, Chief of the USAMU Custom Firearms Shop (CFS), and Sergeant First Class Stephen Christopher, Assistant Team Chief at CFS and an SGTC alumnus.
Hosted by SGTC instructors Jake Pittman (Precision Machining) and Ted Eschmann (Welding), the session offered students insights into career paths that combine advanced manufacturing and military service. The USAMU, though smaller than a typical battalion with approximately 94 soldiers and 35 civilian personnel, plays a crucial role in the Army’s capabilities, specifically through the Custom Firearms Shop.
The CFS is responsible for producing match-grade firearms and ammunition that support USAMU’s competitive shooting teams. Additionally, the shop engages in vital research and development to enhance the Army’s small arms technology and ammunition capabilities. As part of their mission, CFS also collaborates with various Army research centers, providing specialized services that aid in small arms development.
During the visit, SFC Hamernik and SFC Christopher shared recent CFS projects, such as the development of the Lightweight Intermediate Caliber Carbine and associated ammunition, as well as Reduced Range Ammunition to address safety issues linked to advanced technology.
For SGTC students, this recruiting visit provided a unique perspective on how skills in precision machining and welding can support high-level military applications and contribute to advancements in technology and safety within the U.S. Army.
