SGTC Student Organizations Attend Winter Conference
Several South Georgia Technical College students brought home first place awards from the 2018 Georgia Student Government Association (GSGA) and National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) Winter Conference and Competitions recently. The conference was held at The Lodge and Spa at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain and hosted students from 16 of Georgia’s 22 Technical Colleges.
Members from both organizations on the Americus and Cordele campuses attended the conference to compete with other colleges at the state level and also learn from their peers.
Dakota Hall of Cordele, a Computer Information Systems major and Vice President of both the NTHS and SGA Crisp County Chapters, was given the first place award and named the NTHS Outstanding Citizen of the Year award for his service to the college and the community.
Hall was also a part of the first-place-winning NTHS Chapter of the Year team, which included NTHS member Joshua Chappell of Cordele, Culinary Arts, and NTHS President and State Officer Christian Powell of Cordele, Computer Information Systems.
“Katrice [Taylor] and I are so proud of our NTHS students for their first place wins at the 2018 GSGA and NTHS Winter Conference,” Kari Bodrey, NTHS and SGA Advisor said. “Our students are very active on campus and in the community. They are involved not for personal gain, but because they want to make a positive difference in the world around them. However, it is an honor for them to be recognized at the state level.”
South Georgia Tech’s Crisp County chapter of Student Government Association also received a participation award in the running for GSGA Chapter of the Year. The team submission was comprised of SGA members Desiray Kenney of Cordele, SGA Secretary, Accounting; Kimberly Trejo of Cordele, SGA Parliamentarian, Medical Assisting; and Dakota Hall.
Other members who attended the event included Americus campus SGA members Tonya Rodgers of Oglethorpe, Medical Assisting; Michael Dewberry of Smithville, Motor Sports; Jennifer West of Americus, Drafting; Katelyn Burgess of Americus, Cosmetology, and Stephanie John of Ellaville, Networking Specialist.
In addition to competing, SGA and NTHS members attended sessions designed to enhance their skills in leadership and communication as well as teach them more about community service, support and mentorship.
Cynthia Carter, Director of Career Services and Student Organizations, echoed Bodrey’s sentiments when she said how proud she was of the SGA and NTHS students who participated in the conference.
“Our students went above and beyond to participate in competitions and attend leadership sessions,” she said. “We couldn’t be more proud of our students.”
