SGTC’s Joey Singletary wins basket for completing QEP course
South Georgia Technical College Medical Assisting student Joey Singletary of Montezuma was the winner of a huge basket of goodies recently, announced Teresa McCook, SGTC Criminal Justice Instructor and QEP Director.
All SGTC students who completed the college’s fall QEP (Quality Enhancement Plan) free online course were entered into a special drawing. The course was titled “QEPFALL2024 Organization” and was designed to help students learn how to effectively communicate and set S.M.A.R.T. (Specific, Measurable, Action-Oriented or Achievable, Realistic and Time-bound) goals. The students earned certificates for each module completed and the certificates could be utilized in their portfolios for future employment opportunities.
The theme for SGTC’s QEP efforts is “Ready, Set, J.E.T (Jobs, Education, and Training). SGTC’s QEP plan is designed to focus on the soft skills students need to be successful in the workplace. It is focused on the importance of Effective Communication and the various ways communication has an impact on life. Students are encouraged to define effective communication while learning more about the four main mediums of communication – verbal, nonverbal, written, and visual.
“I am so excited for Joey,” said SGTC Medical Assisting Instructor Sheri Bass. “He is a great student and so deserving!”
The SGTC Fall QEP online course consisted of several modules and students could earn five certificates. Students enrolling in the course could earn a certificate in 1.) Achieving Your Goals, 2.) Effective Classroom Listening, 3.) Attitude and Teamwork, 4.) Communicating with your Professor/Instructor, and 5.) Verbal Communication at Work. There was a pre-test and post-test for the two modules.
Module 1 was titled SMART Goals and Module 2 was titled, Effective Communication. Based on an exit survey, the students said the course was “extremely helpful and not too long.” It took students about an hour to complete both parts.
The students were encouraged to take a photo of each certificate with their name on it and send the photos to their advisor and QEP Committee member Teresa McCook. Every student that completed the course and submitted documentation was entered into the drawing for the large laundry basket full of prizes including SGTC logo items. Students who completed both modules had their names entered into the drawing twice.
