Thirteen graduates of the South Georgia Technical College Practical Nursing program received their nursing pins in a recent ceremony in the John M. Pope Industrial Technology Center on the Americus campus. A crowd of family, friends, administrators, and instructors attended the event to show their support as the students participated in the traditional pinning ritual.

SGTC President Dr. John Watford welcomed those in attendance and graduate Sequaja Renae Carter gave the invocation. Practical Nursing instructor Jennifer Childs provided a class overview and presented a slideshow featuring the students over the course of their studies in the program.

Tori Getman was selected by her classmates to speak for the class. “This journey has not been easy,” she said. “It has been filled with challenges that tested our resilience and moments that tested our patience. But it has also been filled with victories both big and small. Each patient that we helped, each skill that we mastered, and each time that we comforted someone in need, we were reminded that we were exactly where we needed to be.”

After the speech, Jennifer Childs and fellow Practical Nursing instructor Christine Rundle called each member of the class to the stage individually to receive their pin and a rose.

Graduates receiving their pins were Sierra Banks of Americus, pinned by her sister and SGTC graduate Erica Hawkins LPN; Destiny Brown of Columbus, pinned by her mother Stacey Williams RN; Mierica Brown of Sylvester, pinned by her mother Lynn Brown RN and aunt Dondria Lovett LPN; Maggie Butler of Cordele, pinned by Christine Rundle ; Samiya Campbell of Buena Vista, pinned by her aunt Kate Cromer LPN ; Sequaja Renae Carter of Leesburg, pinned by her mother Tina Wingfield RN ; Bridgett Cox of Americus, pinned by Christine Rundle; Tori Getman of Americus, pinned by Sherri Bass RN; Ally Ledlow of Sylvester, pinned by her boyfriend Jeremy Ledger RN; Sabrina Cherelle Milledge of Americus, pinned by SGTC Grad Ashley Walker LPN; Kimberly Nipper of Reynolds, pinned by her “Nanny” Betty Pierce RN; Amber Ross of Albany, pinned by Alana Kester FNP and Monica Hood Everett FNP; and Tyeesha L. Woods of Americus, pinned by her cousin and SGTC graduate Keleshia Dowdell LPN.

After the pinning, Carter led the class in the Nurse’s Pledge and the lighting of the lamp. Instructor Christine Rundle gave closing remarks followed by a prayer and benediction by graduate Mierica Brown.
