TSG wins SGTC Jets Booster Club Sparky Reeves Classic Golf Tournament
TSG took first place in the fifth annual South Georgia Technical College Jets Booster Club Sparky Reeves Classic Golf Tournament held at the Griffin Bell Golf and Conference Center in Americus, Georgia recently. Brandon Horne, Kory Hobbs, and Gatewood Ledbetter comprised the three-man team for TSG and they had a one stroke lead over the Citizens Bank team which finished second and a two-stroke lead over the third place Hooks-Simmons team.
“I appreciate everyone who came out and played in the tournament and supported the South Georgia Technical College Jets and Lady Jets athletic teams today,” said South Georgia Technical College President Emeritus Sparky Reeves. “This was a great day and I am proud to be here to recognize TSG as the winner this year,” said Reeves when he presented Brandon Horne of TSG with the first place trophy.
Georgia Southwestern State University was the 2018 tournament champion and they upended Karl Booker and the Harrod Tree team who had been the reigning champions for the prior two years. The Hooks Agency was the winner in the first annual Sparky Reeves Classic in 2015.
Citizens Bank of Americus finished in second place in the tournament this year behind TSG. The team of George Roquemore, Chad Denham and Steven Avant finished with a 47 and then the Hooks-Simmons team of Rhett Simmons, William Rambo and Brian Simmons came in third place with a 48.
“We would like to thank all of the teams who participated in the fifth annual South Georgia Technical College Jets Booster Club Sparky Reeves Golf Tournament this year,” said South Georgia Technical College Athletic Director and Lady Jets head coach James Frey. “We had a lot of fun and we raised funds for our student athletes and the Jets Booster Club. It was a great day!”
South Georgia Technical College President Emeritus Sparky Reeves, who played in the tournament with his son and grandson, Kevin and Will Reeves, also thanked everyone for their participation and support. “I am humbled by the turnout and the support. I also am very glad that this is a Classic Tournament and not a Memorial Tournament,” laughed Reeves. “I thank everyone who had a part in making this a reality this year and for the last four years. I would also like to encourage everyone to come out and watch the Jets and Lady Jets this season. I think you will be impressed.”
Dr. John Watford, South Georgia Technical College President, also thanked all of the participants for the support for President Emeritus Sparky Reeves, the Jets and Lady basketball teams and for the college, its students, and faculty and staff. “This is a great day and we are here to support our Jets and Lady Jets. We are so appreciative of the support that we receive from each of you and from the community as a whole,” said Dr. Watford.
Twenty-five teams signed up to participate in the three-person scramble which featured a shotgun start, longest drive, and closest to the pin contest in addition to prizes for the top three teams. Hulme Kinnebrew and Brian Simmons both received prizes for Longest Drives and Jimmy Whaley and Shane Foote were recognized for Closest to the Pin.
